There are many reasons to consider getting a pet and many reasons not to. Fish, in particular, are a great addition to your home in the same way that other pets can cause a big ruckus.

Fish don’t make any noise. They don’t yap at the gate for hours on end, or chirp and squawk, or make that weird wailing noise when other cats come into their yard in the middle of the night.

Fish don’t leave poop lying around for you to pick up in the yard, litter box or around the house. A fish doesn’t need any sort of house training, and all you have to do is clean a fish tank once a month, unlike litter boxes of dogs and cats, or hamster and bird cages that need cleaning thrice a week.

Fish don’t shed and if they do, they live with it, not you. Fishes don’t put their owners through the horrors of shedding hair – they won’t ruin your couch, suit, upholstery or any household equipment with their old hair. A fish doesn’t know what a hairball is, or how to make one. They also don’t pose a threat to destroy your curtains, linens, or freshly ironed clothes, and can’t jump up and down to ruin your couch’s cushions.

Fish won’t eat you out of house and home and they won’t steal the food off your plate either. They don’t need water, or shade, or brushing and bathing. They don’t have to be played with or exercised, and you can pretty much ignore them for days on end. They won’t do the same as dogs by peeing next to your car tires, chomping on the plants in your garden, or burrowing in your lawn.

Fish are not scared of fireworks or thunder. On New Year’s Day or the Fourth of July, you don’t have to bother sedating your fishes, or worry that they aren’t in one piece anymore after returning home from a night of holiday revelry.

If you want to talk to fish, you can – and they won’t answer back in anger. They won’t expect you to be at their beck and call 24/7. It is a pleasant sight to see fishes swimming in the aquarium – fishes that don’t need to be taken care of so often. You have to feed them regularly but it’s just a sprinkling of flaked food no cans to open, bowls to clean, or shells to pick up off the floor.

Fish, however, don’t react to your presence they are never happy to see you. They won’t sleep next to you when it gets too cold and give you much-needed warmth. You can’t hug fish unless you want to squeeze them to death, nor can you play with them outside of tapping the glass. Fishes won’t provide any source of comfort or affection when you need it the most, and don’t know the meaning of unconditional love. If that’s what you’re looking for from your pet then get a fish.
